Hello, my name is Kenny and I just stumbled upon this group while
researching a term paper I’m writing on Riddley Walker. I was
wondering if any of you might be able to help me a bit. I have
narrowed my possible topics down to two:1. Tell the story of why the crow is black and curses all the time
(p. 125), which is mentioned in the book and not told; or

2. Write about the development and education of Riddley through his
own ‘Master Chaynjis’; basically how he evolves from the beginning to
the end.

If anyone can help me with some ideas on this it’d be great, Im
having a bit of trouble

Thanks

If you haven’t already discovered it, Kenny, I recommend a leisurely stroll
around www.graphesthesia.com/rw/And, while you’re exploring the possibilities of 1., I think you’d also find
it rewarding to get yourself a copy of ‘The Moment Under The Moment’
(Stories, a Libretto, Essays and Sketches) and to have a look at ‘The Raven’
and ‘Schwartz’.

Well being,
Chris

Group: the-kraken Message: 3525 From: Richard Cooper Date: 10/12/2004
Subject: Bloomsbury’s prize giveaway for the Convention

As you will all know from my post last week, Bloomsbury (Russell Hoban’s
publisher) are promoting the Some-Poasyum as one of their key author events
of 2005. Now, their fabulous publicity department have donated to the
convention a COMPLETE SET OF SIGNED BLOOMSBURY EDITIONS OF RUSSELL HOBAN’S
NOVELS, which we will be awarding to the winner of the “Mastermind: The Gap”
quiz! That’s right! Lovingly (re)designed and autographed editions of all of these
classic Hoban works could be yours: The Lion of Boaz-Jachin and Jachin-Boaz,
Kleinzeit, Turtle Diary, Riddley Walker (20th Anniversary Edition),
Pilgermann, The Medusa Frequency, Fremder, Mr Rinyo-Clacton’s Offer,
Angelica’s Grotto, Amaryllis Night and Day, The Bat Tattoo, Her Name Was
Lola… and as if all that weren’t enough, the collection also includes a
hardback of the brand-new novel Come Dance With Me, due out in February
2005.

The complete collection of the paperback reissues from Lion to Rinyo-Clacton
and the original Bloomsbury imprints from Angelica to Lola can be viewed at:

http://www.bloomsbury.com/Authors/microsite.asp?id=130

&section=1&aid=662&mscssid=E6LT6JCWSLMJ9NJ530JLXDKE25D79E6B

The quiz will consist of questions, set by convention organisers, on Russell
Hoban’s life and writings. The competition will be open only to convention
participants. Quiz sheets will be given out at the Il Fornello dinner on
Friday 11th February and in order to stand a chance of winning must be
handed in by the end of the Nomad Books evening on Saturday 12th February.
The correct answers will be announced and the prizes presented at The
Troubadour dinner on the evening of Sunday 13th February.

If you haven’t already signed up for this increasingly essential event, zip
along right away to www.hoban2005.co.uk

Richard

Subject: T-Shirt slogans

Hi Awl,We’re in the process of choosing a slogan to put on our Convention t-shirt.

There will be a choice of colour and size, and the following are the
suggestions I’ve made for the slogan.

If any of you have any other suggestions, Richard and Roland are about to
create a poll for the Convention site (www.hoban2005.co.uk/) so we can
choose the best slogan. Remember: You’re not stuck with my suggestions if
you can think of some better ones.

1. Which is the dream?
2. Biting the wheel is not enough
3. I wunt have no other track
4. I the undesigned
5. KILL COMES AGAIN
6. STAFF ONLY
7. A4 [in very large black characters on a yellow t-shirt]
8. Dark autumn rain, ah!
The lighted aquarium;
The mermaid – her smile!
9. Walk in danger, walk in error,
Walk ahead in Morton Taylor
10. Up the Athenians
11. If sky were earth and ocean sky
Green turtles would be kites to fly
12. Which way is Thrace?
13. Unnatural Practices yes [This was one of Roland’s suggestions].

Further to Chris’s post, you will soon be able to vote for your favourite
suggested slogan on the Hoban2005 site. Before that though, as Chris says,
if you don’t like any of the suggestions, please propose one of your own and
it will be added to the poll.As time is running out for convention preparations, if you wish to propose a
new slogan please do it NOW as we must open the poll in a few days’ time.

Even if you really can’t make it to the convention, please register your
interest as these t-shirts (and other convention memorabilia) will be
available to non-participants as well.

Cheers,
Richard

tee-shirts – & “sums up” all of Hoban’s work is:

Excellent suggestions, Marion and Hamish.Keep them coming!

I’ll post another reminder about slogans on Thursday, giving
everyone another 24 hours before Richard puts the t-shirt poll up on
the convention site (www.hoban2005.co.uk), then we can all vote for
our favourite … I think it’s going to be a tough choice.

Hello
I’d love to come to the convention, but probably won’t know til mid-January
or so whether there will be a squeeze-throughable gap in in my time and
money (and that of my krakenite friend lara, who I’m having some trouble
unearthing right now)… will it be ok to register that late if I can? Can I
order t-shirts anyway? (btw, I like far too many of the t-shirt suggestions
to choose, but then, ever since I read Amaryllis Night & Day, I’ve wished
for drawerfuls of them…)

It depends how long you are happy to have people peering at you…

I would go for:

‘Where did you read that?’ said Sister.
‘It was told me,’ said Kleinzeit, ‘by an Orpheus scholar.’

But then I would, wouldn’t I?

If you had that on a T-shirt, you would have to spend the entire day
explaining yourself to everyone you met. (Starting with me — what does
it mean?) Not necessarily a bad thing. It could have interesting
consequences.

Lindsay,I think you’ll find this sentence is in Krakenspeak, the language invented
by legendary auteur Gosta Kraken to subtitle his films, which were otherwise
in English. As he wrote in his book “The Flickering”, “under our ordinary
speech there are always invisible subtitles in an unknown tongue”.

Sadly “The Flickering” is long out of print and Gosta Kraken died in 1986
following a bizarre accident involving a tin globe. The only surviving
translations of Krakenspeak exist in “The Medusa Frequency” by one R. Hoban
(q.v.). I consulted the book this evening, but could find no such sentence
in it.

The only conclusion I could come to is that Hugh actually speaks
Krakenspeak…

Dear Lisa,Great to hear you’re thinking of coming along! We haven’t actually set a
closing date for registrations as yet but we don’t envisage any problem
registering in January.

Please do reserve your t-shirts in the meantime by emailing your order to

I really hope you and Lara can make it! Is that the same Lara, by the way,
as the Lara who posted the magnificent lion photos to SA4QE?

Best wishes,

Sadly not. Check page 73 of The Medusa Frequency (Bloomsbury edition).
It means (or perhaps better it corresponds with):Behind the front of the day the head of Orpheus swims unseen.

which could go in smaller letters on the back of the T-shirt, along
with an Odilon Redon image.

Wonder if he could sneak a Hoban quote onto the show

Krakenistas and sloganeers,There are only 24 hours left in which to suggest more t-shirt slogans for
the Official Russell Hoban Convention T-Shirt.

Well, you can keep suggesting them after that, but only those received by
this time tomorrow will be included in our t-shirt slogan poll. So send them
in now, so Richard can post the poll to the Convention website and you can
help choose the winning slogan.

We’ve had some excellent suggestions, so if you have any more, don’t be shy.

Krakenistas – I just wanted to draw your attention to two fabulous new
Hoban-themed Flash animations by Olaf Schneider (a.k.a. Nexter Tailer).
Olaf’s latest update to his SA4QE page (go to www.thoughtcat.com/sa4qe and
click Olaf’s name in the menu bar, or go direct to the page at
http://www.thoughtcat.com/sa4qe/os.htm) is an evocative treatment of a quote
from Turtle Diary. Meanwhile, Olaf has also designed a fantastic piece for
the front page of the Some-Poasyum website which displays a whole host of
visual ideas from the world of Russell Hoban – how many can YOU find? Go to
the home page at www.hoban2005.co.uk , scroll down to the image box and
either point your mouse at random points to see different images, or move
your mouse over the whole box slowly from left to right to see a lovely
little “film” which culminates in a surprise cameo appearance! (And no, it’s
not Olaf…)I’ve enjoying all the t-shirt slogans, by the way!

Best wishes

Folks, I am a poor little reader of only one book, but this immediately
comes to mind for some quick, compelling t-shirt art:Can you get artwork? Artwork can really enhance a T-shirt of few words. And
the T-shirts are for fun and in-group smiles as well as getting attention
afterwards, “Awl I got wuz this lousy…”

1. Wotcher?
(Graphic: A face of someone gorning?)

2. Arga Warga…
(Graphic: A dog in the iconic form of the Jurassic Park dinosaur)

3. A greeting in Riddleyspeak:
Front: Trubba Not?
Back: No Trubba!
(Graphics: Handshakes, open hand held high in sign of OK.)

4. A sing-song t-shirt:
Front: No rumpa no dum
Back: No zantigen Eusa cum.
(Graphics: Cut-out figures after Matisse of kids dancing in a circle like in
Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring or like in the book/film Lord of the Flies).

5. I am Drop John the Foller Man
(Graphic: Picture of the Devvil?)

I could go on…

Embarrasing, this…
I dont nearly remember – its been a long time since I read Pilgerman – and to think the author reads these pages, and Im most likely to spew a skewed half-misrememberment, but cherished (for the t-shirt) this (or something very like it, from the author);

Subject: Re: T-shirt designs for the undesigned

Attention all the undesigned! The Russell Hoban Some-Poasyum T-Shirt Slogan
Poll is finally open.Huge thanks to all those who proposed a total of 54(!) slogans to adorn the
official convention t-shirt.

Before you vote, please note the following:

– Most of the slogan suggestions are original quotes from Russell Hoban
books and it is understood that we have permission to use any of these for
the purpose stated. However, some of the “Amaryllis” slogans are quotes from
other authors’ works (Tom Waits, Walter de la Mere etc), so please bear in
mind that it may not be possible or economical to obtain permission from
those authors or their estates to reproduce the quotes.

– The t-shirt price of £12 (12GBP) quoted on the convention website only
takes into account designs for the front of the t-shirt. Our t-shirt
manufacturer advises that putting designs on both front and back will cost
more, so please bear in mind when casting your vote that these slogans may
put up the price of the t-shirt.

– Some suggestions include ideas for graphics to illustrate the quotes.
Please bear in mind that it may not be possible to reproduce such graphics,
but if one of those suggestions wins the poll we will do our best to put
this into effect.

– All votes are anonymous and don’t require any personal information
whatsoever. Just go to the page, click the radio button to the left of your
desired slogan, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Vote
now”. Your choice will be counted and you will be taken to the results page
where you can see which slogan is winning so far.

– You can if you wish view the current status of the results before casting
your vote by clicking the “view results” button at the bottom of the page.

– You may only vote once, so please read all the suggestions carefully
before making your choice!

– If you don’t like any of the suggestions, at the bottom of the list is a
button where you can vote for NO SLOGAN.

– You shouldn’t experience any technical problems using the polling system,
but if you do, please contact me at ric_____@_____.uk (richard at
hoban2005 dot co dot uk) with your vote and I will cast it on your behalf.

– The most popular quote will be printed on the t-shirt. In the event of a
tie, er… we’ll cross that brudge when we come to it.

To cast your vote for the slogan YOU feel should adorn the official
convention t-shirt, head off to www.hoban2005.co.uk and click “Polls” in the
menu.

Best wishes and happy polling!

Richard

We love Russ:1. Because he takes us to worlds beyond our dare.

2. Because his vistas protect us from our oansome Berstin Fyr.

3. Because he makes us a present of the really scary dreadful things beneath
our reality.

4. Because he helps us meet danger by showing us our source of power.

5. Because he helps me live in my mind.

I was riffing, but I think there might be something there you can use?

Dear ChrisFor the 80 at 80:

Because ‘he dint do nothing randem he had tack ticks’
(and because actually that’s not always true; what
happens, delightfully, happens).

For his refreshingly subversive children’s stories.

Because the meaty main dish is always accompanied by a
rich and piquant melange of references to art, music,
literature, theology, history, science,
London…..intoxicating, stimulating and decidedly
moreish

Because he’s so damned funny.

Group: the-kraken Message: 3564 From: Richard Cooper Date: 29/12/2004
Subject: Convention t-shirt slogan poll results

The Russell Hoban Some-Poasyum T-Shirt Slogan Poll has now closed, after
registering an excellent 55 votes. Big thanks to everyone who came out and
voted for their favourite!”Biting the wheel is not enough” from “The Lion of Boaz-Jachin and
Jachin-Boaz” is the clear winner with 34.55% of the total vote.

However, as there were so many tantalising slogans to choose from, we’d like
to print up one set of t-shirts emblazoned with the winning “Lion” quote AND
a second set with a different slogan, to give people a choice. As the
original poll left the runners-up somewhat scattered, we’ve set up a second
poll of the 8 other highest-scoring slogans and the “no slogan” option.

As the convention is now fast approaching we need to close this second (and
final) poll by next Monday (3rd January) at 6am GMT, so please visit the
Polls page on www.hoban2005.co.uk now to cast your “second slogan” vote.

Hope everyone here is having a great Christmas/holiday season!

Regards,
Richard C.

Well… I’ve been feeling a little bad that I haven’t really

feeling so bad now because I am going to GO TO the convention! Yay!An old friend from New York has just moved to London so I’ve got a
place to stay… & will have a couple extra days to hang out before &
after the group events. He’s not a Hobanite but is curious about
Canterbury, so he may head out there on Sunday and do some wandering
around separate from the official tour.

Wish I could make it more like a 2-week trip (I’ve never been to
England for more than 6 days) but I know it’ll be good. Greatly
looking forward to meeting some of you. (Er I mean, I’d look forward

Hello everyone,I feel very guilty that I haven’t contributed to this group for such a long
time. As a lurker, though, I have to say this event looks tremendously
exciting! I am going to have to see how work schedules pan out over the
coming week or so – and if I can make it, I will do so. Here’s hoping!

Also, an embarassingly long time ago, I offered to copy the ‘The Mouse and
His Child’ animated film and the ‘Turtle Diary’ movie for some people. I’m
not sure if I ever got around to doing it or not. If I did, I hope you
enjoyed it, if I didn’t please badger me again and I’ll get onto it!!!
Richard, were you one of these?

I can now copy onto DVD, if this is preferred. Hope this doesn’t contravene
any copyright laws. As far as I’m aware, both movies are way out of print.

Finally, I recall some DVDs being made available to Krakenistas – again,
some years ago probably. Maybe an interview or something. Is this still
available?

Catching up is very difficult. I’ll try to keep my eyes open a little longer
in future.

Love to you all. Hope to meet some of you in February.
