Group: the-kraken Message: 6838 From: Dave Awl Date: 24/11/2010
Subject: Phone call from Russ: British Library event moving to larger venue,

Just got off the phone with Russ, and he wanted me to pass along the following bit of news: He says the event at the British Library has proven to be “more popular than was anticipated,” and the upshot is that it will be moving to a larger venue.Apparently the wave of Russmania we’ve all been working to build for so many years is finally cresting. ; )

The date will also be changing; Russ says they’ve given him his choice of February 15, 16, or 17, and he’ll let us know the final date once it’s settled.

Oh, and speaking of Russmania, he says the response to Angelica Lost and Found has felt more positive than anything he’s experienced since Riddley Walker. He sounds a little stunned (and pleased, obviously) at how uniformly good the reviews have been.

Then he told me ten minutes’ worth of very silly jokes about babies who look like monkeys, and giraffes in refrigerators.

He also mentioned that he’ll be working on his next book with Quentin Blake, which is called Rosie’s Magic Horse, sometime around the summer of 2011.

And he’s working on his next novel, something he started a while back and then put aside because he didn’t know where to go with it, but new ideas have come to him so he’s slowly getting back into it. (He told me the working title but asked me to keep it under my hat till he gets a little farther along.)

As you were …

Dave

Thanks Dave, awesome stuff :-)I now understand from Jake Wilson, via Russ himself, that the British
Library talk has been confirmed for 6:30pm on Tuesday 15th February, in the
Conference Hall.

Just to say that the British Library page for booking tickets for the event
( http://www.bl.uk/whatson/events/event116259.html ) hasn’t been updated yet
with the new date but it’s assumed tickets bought will still be valid for
the new date/venue.RC

Financial Times review: “Hoban believes there are at least two forms of
reality, so anyone in search of a linear narrative probably shouldnt look
to him to provide it. … he is a louche writer of 1940s pulp fiction
trapped in the laptop of a hyper-intelligent, metaphysically challenged
modern Jew.”http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/d6e47b10-ede9-11df-8616-00144feab49a.html#axzz15uH6U4Ea

Russ’s piece for the Guardian Book Club on Riddley Walker is now online:http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/nov/26/russell-hoban-riddley-walker

This will appear in tomorrow’s print edition.

I just spoke to Russ about it briefly and asked him if it was a new piece he
had written or if it was developed from his interview at the Guardian the
other night (of which more soon) because there are several phrases in it
that Russ used exactly at the interview. He said though that it was a piece
he had written for the Book Club.

Enjoy

I especially liked the last Q&A:What does it mean to be a writer?
It’s the highest form of living I can think of.

So many writers beat themselves up. It is wonderful to see a great writer take
pride in what he does.

Subject: Ticket situation – Russell Hoban and Will Self at the British Librar

Hi allThose of you interested in attending the February gig might be
reassured by this email which has been sent to buyers of tickets for
the original 2nd February date:

Event at the British Library – Russell Hoban and Will Self in
Conversation – Wednesday 2 February

Due to overwhelming demand for tickets it was decided that this event
should be moved to a larger venue. Unfortunately this has necessitated
moving the event to another date, Tuesday 15 February, as the
auditorium was not available on 2 February.

If you do wish to attend on Tuesday 15 February your ticket for 2
February will still be valid for the new date. Please bring your
ticket or confirmation email along with you.

If you no longer wish to attend this event due to the change of date
and paid with a credit or charge card please contact the Box Office on
01937 546 546. Please have the card you used to book your tickets with
on hand when you call so that a credit can be made direct to your
card.

Again I apologise for any inconvenience this change may cause you and
hope you will still be able to attend.

Best wishes

I’m no expert (indeed not even a novice) on this topic, Anthony, but your criticisms seem valid to me. One of the more pleasant aspects of Wikipedia in my opinion is that it’ll always be a work in progress. I agree that many of its entries include vague, unsupported assertions and I’m probably stating the obvious here, but…You could edit the entry or make your suggestions under the ‘Discussion’ section?

Yes, all this positivity seems to have taken our man by surprise…
although of course he expected it!

A nascent Volatore appeared in ‘The Last of the Wallendas’ thus:

The Hippogriff

Long centuries have I soared above the Earth;
the mind of Ariosto gave me birth.
Sired by a griffon (he imagined) on a mare,
I course the currents of the upper air
(in his time unpolluted, crystalline, and pure
but now a mixture that I scarce endure to breathe). My mighty pinions have
grown tired;
I fly, no more by winged words inspired,
from habit only. What else can I do?
The times are out of joint, and heroes few.
No more do maidens chained to rocks
want rescue – now in tiny frocks
they seek out monsters more to be abhorred
than poor old Orca; all he hoped to do was eat
a juicy virgin for a little treat:
Angelica it was, Miss World of her time –
a real stunner, horrid was the crime
of sacrificing one so young in all her beauty,
but heroes then were sworn to do their duty;
and so Ruggiero sped to the attack
in heavy armour, mounted on my back.
I bore him swiftly to the fray;
he did the job and then we came away,
Angelica now riding in the pillion seat,
Ruggiero looking forward to his treat.
My youth is gone and shrivelled is my fame;
I’ll end my days in some computer game
with characters whose lips move when they read
their circuits, myrmidons who need
no seats nor mountains, neither skies of blue.
How are the mighty fallen! My last hope is you.

Subject: Riddley Walker Guardian Book Club – final week

The last article in this series, a summary by John Mullan of responses
to Riddley Walker by readers from both the Guardian talkboards and the
London interview, is published today on the website and in the print
edition:http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/dec/04/riddley-walker-russell-hoban-book-club

Not much new here to most Krakenoids, parbly, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Hola Krakenistas,Just for the sake of mentioning it here, the News page at The Head of Orpheus has been updated with some of the recent Hobanical activity.

There’s nothing there that will come as a surprise to regular readers of this Yahoo Group, but it might come in handy to have the various links archived in one place.

Proofreading, typo-spotting, etc. welcome as always:

There are probably quite a few of these things around really, but I
don’t generally go looking for them, so it’s interesting when they
crop up.

Not just a painting of a tractor, I’d hasten to say, but one that makes one proud to be a tractor (or, probably, the owner – or potential owner – of such a tractor).True Russian constructivist stjuff, did they but know its subversive message, I’d say – it’s all in the genes. Wonder what’s in Russ’ five-year plan…

Some of you may remember advising me that there were books other than the so-called Earthsea Quartet. I am now reading one of them, The Other Wind, and enjoying the further encounter with the stories of these lands. However, is it just me, or do others think that (the ambiguity of how) this sentence reads would have justified the judicious intervention of a copy editor?:

Tenar saw Seserakh – veiled of course from hat to foot,
but unmistakeable by her height and bearing – descend from
her carriage and sail, stately as a ship herself, towards the gangplank.

[I have had to cut the lines short to preserve the relevance sequence of words intact. I should have preferred ‘[…] and, stately as a ship herself, sail towards […]’]

Is your point that it’s unclear wheter it is Tenar och Seserakh that is veiled etc?

It’s fine by me. “stately as a ship herself” refs “sail” and reinforces the
image of the subject while it’s at it. Ships are women, after all, and
(beloved) ambiquity *can* be craft.
