I’d like to add my praise for the new website. Well done to Richard and
collaborators!
I particularly enjoyed the biography with quotations from interviews and a
couple of relevant excerpts from his published work.
The “getting into” section is good too. I wondered briefly whether the
recommendations came out of the poll earlier this year, but not wanting to
appear lazy I went and found the poll and no, the recommendations are
separate. Good work though!
Cheers
Steve

Thanks Steve, no I drafted the “getting into” article and had a bit of
input from others too. It’s a hard thing to write though when you’re a
fan of almost all the books!RC

Group: the-kraken Message: 8304 From: apsley88 Date: 25/09/2012
Subject: Quotation help needed!

I cannot find any of my copies of The Medusa Frequency, and, from what I have looked through on SA4QE, no one has recently 4qated what I seek:It’s where Gombert Yawncher tells Hermann Orff that he and a few others populate London, and I’d like, in addition to the quotation, the page number and the date of the edition (ideally from the Jonathan Cape, but I can’t be choosy)…

Thanks, knowing that Hobanites the world over will be rummaging in their copies as I try to sleep!

Hey, gang,
Trouble Puppet Theater Company’s production of Riddley Walker is nominated for an astonishing eight B. Iden Payne Awards. (These awards are awards by the Austin theater community’s BIP committee; they are Austin’s most prestigious awards.) We’ve never had a show garner so many nominations before.
Best,
Kathryn

Subject: Re: Quotation help needed!

Sorry this has taken me so long, Anthony – you’ve probably found the quote yourself by now. I believe the passage you’re looking for is in Chapter 8, ‘Tower Hill and the Cheshire Cheese’. Gom Yawncher says to Herman Orff:”Yesterday you were the conductor on the 11 bus and you also did quite a nice little tobacconist in the Charing Cross Road. Actually London hasn’t got that big a cast, there’s only about fifty of us, all working flat out.”

As far as page references go, I don’t have the Jonathan Cape edition but it’s on page 56 of the US hardback edition (Atlantic Monthly Press) and also the 1988 Picador paperback (UK).

Hope that helps.

Thanks anyway

I’ve been leaving the proposed Riddley Walker concordance aside while I was busy with more pressing things – that’s why those of you who kindly offered to proofread have not been contacted since I first accepted your offers. However, now that I’m freer, the need for the labour of volunteer proofreaders has actually gone: with the release of a Kindle version of RW, it will now be possible to check the e-text I have got (which is marked up ready for concordancing) against the original through automated file comparison rather than careful eyeballing.

Once I’ve done that, I’ll put a basic concordance online, with a view to adding more facilities later.

But anyway, thanks to all the potential proofreaders for offering!

Yes, the impression I got from comparing with the OCR’d text is that these were *not* (or at least , not *all*) OCR errors. The Bloomsbury and Indiana editions are patently from the same plates, which suggests they only had the typeset text to go on.peter

Hello everyoneA while back we talked about the production of The Mouse and His Child which is on at Stratford-upon-Avon (UK) over Christmas and the New Year. Is anyone going? I’m thinking of booking tickets for the first weekend in January (no children, just two adults!)

Hi Lisa,I have booked to go in November, but didn’t say anything on the group as by
the time I realised the tickets were on sale they were starting to sell out
at the time my family and I were able to go, so I decided to just grab some
rather than post here first. For the record, we’re going on 23rd November,
so if you or anyone else happens to be going that same day then please get
in touch off-list as I’d be delighted to meet up.

Best, Richard

Subject: Disappointed with ‘The Medusa Frequency’ e-book edition

I’m disappointed with Bloomsbury’s formatting of the Kindle edition of ‘The Medusa Frequency’ – especially since they’re selling it at the premium price of US$9.99 (the price most new books sell for on Amazon, FWIW).I doubt whether anyone checked the file before it was published on Amazon. The line spacing is all over the place and new sections are indented (which they aren’t in any of the original editions). There are also missing apostrophes and other errors.

I might even have asked for a refund – I still intend to report the poor formatting – but since I have a couple of print editions of the book and bought it mainly to make searching on text strings easier, I decided not to bother. I’m mentioning it here in case anyone is thinking of buying it. I wouldn’t let allow any of my own e-books to be published in this condition and think it’s a shame Bloomsbury has been so slap-happy about it.

Has anyone bought any of the other books on Kindle yet?

Thanks for the memory-jogger, Anthony! I’ve now added your memoir to the
links page: http://www.russellhoban.org/links
And the photos of Russ from that article to the photo gallery:
http://www.russellhoban.org/image-galleryObviously these are quite small images so if you happen to still have your
originals I can add those to overwrite these versions.

Thanks again, Richard

Group: the-kraken Message: 8334 From: goatless_turpin Date: 22/10/2012
Subject: Riddley Walker concordance

The long-promised concordance to Riddley Walker is now available on the official RH site at:
http://www.russellhoban.org/the-riddley-walker-concordanceThis is a basic initial version – it’s just a collection of text files. In future, the plan is to have all the material in a database, which will allow for sophisticated queries. But I’ve been unable so far to find ready-made free software to do this, so this prospect is still some way off.

There’s one minor problem still to be fixed: the fractions don’t display properly. Richard & I will try and sort this out.

I’m reasonably confident that the textual basis of the concordance is accurate, since it is based on comparison of two electronic texts created by different methods. But if you do find an error, please let me know.

Finally, thanks to Richard for getting all the material up on the site.

Risible and, like a lot of stories nowadays, not strictly true. See the update here:http://boingboing.net/2012/10/22/kindle-user-claims-amazon-dele.html

Amazon did NOT remotely erase her Kindle. It was broken. I’m not a digital rights management apologist and Amazon has a lot of questions to answer in this regard (not least, why it blocked this woman’s account on the mere suspicion of it being linked to a blocked account), but its neither Amazon policy to remotely delete people’s Kindle libraries if it blocks their account for some reason nor did it “nuke” this Kindle, as was initially reported in numerous places.

Yes, Amazon is a faceless, multinational beast and customers (particularly in the UK it seems…?) appear to have valid concerns about poor customer service experiences. FWIW, In over 10 years of buying things from Amazon – and more recently selling things through Amazon KDP – I’ve never had a negative experience with the company.

On the other hand, DRM is wrong, stupid and pointless because it doesn’t work. All my books are published DRM-free on the Kindle Store and any writer or publisher can make that choice.

If nothing else, the bad publicity around this case may lead Amazon to amend some of its T&Cs.

Peter has kindly added all his editions of RW to the site. All
editions uploaded can be previewed at
http://www.russellhoban.org/all-editions – click on an edition to see
full details about it. See for example:
http://www.russellhoban.org/edition/riddley-walker-picador-1982

Can I take this opportunity to remind everyone that if you register on
the site (it costs nothing!!) you can add your own editions of Russ’s
books using a simple, short form to record the ISBN, year of
publication etc, as well of course as the cover photo. Then it’ll
appear in the beautiful editions gallery above.

Even better, all users can build up a “virtual bookshelf” of editions
simply by clicking “I have this edition” in the edition page.

The idea of “editions” is to crowdsource the definitive collection of
editions of Russ’s books. We can only do this with your help, so go
ahead and add yours!

I’ve also today added a nice image-overlay function for the “editions”
pages so that now if you click on the modestly-proportioned book cover
photo in a page like
http://www.russellhoban.org/edition/riddley-walker-picador-1982 you
can click on the image to see it in GLORIOUS FULL SIZE.

All bes,
Richard

Subject: Bristol Grammar School enjoy a Hoban day out

Krakenistas,A few weeks ago I was invited by Roland to play a walk-on part in a
three-day extravaganza for his lucky English students. My full report
on the day, complete with photos and videos, is now on the
russellhoban.org site here:

http://www.russellhoban.org/topic/bristol-grammar-school-students-have-a-russell-hoban-day

P.S. We played a glockenspiel in the Underground. There is footage. If
that doesn’t get you clicking nothing will.

Enjoy,
Richard

Subject: The Mouse and His Child stage production – Special ticket discount f

Hey guys!I’ve been in touch with the Royal Shakespeare Company about their new
production of The Mouse and His Child at Stratford-upon-Avon, and
they’ve very kindly extended an offer of discounted ticket prices to
registered users of russellhoban.org.

The £15 ticket offer is for certain performances of the play and is
subject to availability.

To take advantage of the offer simply go to www.russellhoban.org and
either log in if you’ve already registered, or register. Registration
is FREE and allows you to do all sorts of other fun things, such as
add content, comment on articles and take part in forum discussions.

Details of the special offer are linked from underneath the video on
the home page, which incidentally is the official trailer for The
Mouse and His Child, and very intriguing it is too!

Best, Richard
